If you have ever noticed that you sleep like a log during certain weeks and toss and turn during others, your menstrual cycle is almost certainly involved. Research from the National Sleep Foundation shows that up to 67% of menstruating women report disrupted sleep in the days before their period.
The relationship between sex hormones and sleep architecture is complex but increasingly well understood. Both oestrogen and progesterone directly interact with the neurotransmitters and brain regions that regulate sleep onset, sleep depth, and REM cycling.
Sleep in each phase
Menstrual phase (days 1–5)
With hormones at their lowest, sleep can be surprisingly restorative during the early menstrual phase — particularly once cramping subsides. Melatonin production is relatively unimpeded by hormonal interference, and many women report their deepest sleep during days 2 to 4.
Follicular phase (days 6–13)
Rising oestrogen has a mild alerting effect on the brain. Sleep tends to be efficient during this phase — you fall asleep quickly and wake feeling refreshed — but total sleep time may naturally decrease as your energy increases. This is normal and not a cause for concern.
Ovulatory phase (days 14–17)
The oestrogen peak around ovulation can cause a slight elevation in core body temperature, which may delay sleep onset for some women. However, the overall effect is usually mild. If you notice difficulty falling asleep around ovulation, a cooler bedroom environment can help.
Luteal phase (days 18–28)
This is where sleep disruption is most common. Progesterone raises basal body temperature by 0.3–0.5°C, which can interfere with the body's natural temperature drop needed for sleep onset. In the late luteal phase, as both progesterone and oestrogen plummet, the loss of their sedating effects can cause insomnia, vivid dreams, and frequent night waking.

Lower your bedroom temperature to 17–18°C during the last week of your cycle. Use breathable bedding and consider a warm (not hot) shower 90 minutes before bed — the post-shower cooling effect mimics the natural temperature drop that triggers sleepiness.
